HOW TO DRAW A RAVEN (with great naturalist, writer and artist Bernd Heinrich, author of Mind of the Raven and Ravens in Winter)

Photo of raven at Yellowstone National Park by Craig Neff

Ravens are amazing, highly intelligent birds. We decided a few years ago to ask Bernd Heinrich—one of the world's leading experts on ravens—if he would help us teach Naturalist's Notebook visitors how to draw a raven. He agreed to do a 30-second sketch, and dashed off this drawing for us to work with:

Pamelia took Bernd's sketch and created this drawing interaction from it. In the years since then, hundreds of Naturalist's Notebook visitors have used this guide to draw ravens of their own.

Here are some of the ravens and budding raven artists from our drawing interaction. People of all ages have done drawings and they've all had fun. Give it a try! If you're willing, email us a photo of your drawing(s) at info@thenaturalistsnotebook.com (add a photo of yourself drawing if you're O.K. with at ) so we can add it to the slide show below. Your work could inspire others to try drawing!

Bernd Heinrich, emeritus professor of biology at the University of Vermont, is one of the world's foremost field biologists and naturalists and the award-winning author of 20 acclaimed natural history books, for which he has done most of the paintings and illustrations. He lives in Maine.
