Views of the August 2017 total eclipse shared with The Naturalist's Notebook from people across the U.S.

We invited people who follow us on Facebook to share photos from the August 2017 total solar eclipse. From those many shots, we picked a variety from multiple states and put them together in this video. The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. will be in April 2024, when the path of totality will run from Texas to Maine.

Here's how the October 2016 Hunters Moon Supermoon looked from 38 U.S. states and two countries. That weekend hundreds of Moon-watchers shared their photos-taken with everything from cellphones to telescopes-of the Supermoon on The Naturalist's Notebook Facebook page; these are some of those shots.

The esteemed naturalist and writer Bernd Heinrich came upon a dead downy woodpecker hanging from its neck in the fork of a branch in the woods of western Maine. The woodpecker had no wounds. Bernd tries to solve the mystery of what happened to it.

Pamelia Markwood held a camera (iPhone) in her left hand and a paintbrush in her right as she time-lapse filmed herself painting a study of a chinstrap penguin with sumi ink while aboard a rocking ship, the Sergey Vavlilov, near South Georgia Island. This is first in a painting time-lapse series done by Pamelia in the Antarctic.
